Heritage Open Days

12th to 14th September 2008

St Mary’s Church, a unique heritage building with nationally important wall paintings and architecture, and St Edward’s Church, a cathedral to the Arts and Crafts Movement, will again be open during HODs between 10 am and 5 pm on each day.

Both churches will be stewarded by members of The Friends of Kempley Churches and other local people who will provide advice to visitors. 

The programme of events in St Mary’s Church includes:

Saturday 13th 2 – 3 pm: Madge O’Keefe, a noted architectural historian from Cardiff University will give a guided talk about the 12th -14th C architecture, putting into context the returning Crusaders and the Norman Architecture, including the Dymock School of Sculpture. See below

3.30 – 4.30 pm Madge O’Keefe will explain the religious and iconographic significance of the magnificent set of 12th Century Romanesque wall paintings. See below.

Saturday 13th at 6.30 pm: Concert by The Severn Songsters – for details see below.

Sunday 14th from 2 pm onwards: Jonathan Lumby will talk about the Kempe stained glass window and the chancel paintings.

Sunday 14th at 6.30 pm: Choral Evensong with Dymock Church choir.
